Instrument effects in polarized infrared images

Michael R. Descour, MEMBER SPIE University of Arizona Optical Sciences Center Tucson, Arizona 85721 Abstract. We describe three instrument effects that cause polarized infrared images of a blackbody source to exhibit intriguing polarization dependence and image nonuniformity. The origins of these problems are reflection of background radiation from the wire-grid polarizer and frictional heating of the polarizer mount. Our model shows that the two surfaces of a wire-grid polarizer act like a partial polarizer-analyzer pair for reflected radiance. These effects must be considered carefully in applications such as polarimetric remote sensing, which require calibration uncertainties less than 1%.

The Effect of Instrument Polarization Sensitivity on Sea Surface Remote Sensing with Infrared Spectroradiometers
The sensitivity of Fourier transform infrared spectroradiometers to the polarization state of incident radiance can become significant in radiometric measurements of a partially polarized source such as the sea surface. At off-nadir incidence angles and wavenumbers below about 2750 cm21 (wavelengths longer than 3.6 mm), radiance from the sea surface is partially vertically polarized, because th...
متن کاملPolarimetric Scene Modeling in the Thermal Infrared
Interest in polarimetric remote sensing is gaining momentum in the visible and remains strong in the microwave regions of the spectrum. However, passive polarimetric phenomenology in the 3-14 micron infrared (IR) region is complicated by the relative contributions and complementary polarization orientation of the thermally emitted and background reflected radiance. Although this modality has fo...

A new approach to near-infrared (NIR) spectropolarimetry is described, in which the properties of a noncollinear acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) made of an anisotropic crystal of TeO2 is employed to produce a novel instrument that precludes or reduces significantly the use of mechanical parts and simplifies the acquisition of optical rotation spectra of absorbing species in the NIR region...
متن کاملAnalysis of Polarized Light with NICMOS
The Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) contains optics in Cameras 1 and 2 (NIC1 and NIC2) that enable imaging polarimetry at D1 and 2 km, respectively, with unprecedented spatial detail. PreÑight thermal vacuum tests revealed that the three polarizers in each camera have unique polarizing efficiencies and that the rotational orie...

Based on near-infrared polarimetric observations we constrain the degree of linear polarization of the afterglow light of GRB 000301C to less than 30% 1.8 days after the burst. The question whether a GRB is always accompanied by a collimated outflow, often called a jet, is one of the key issues of current GRB research. Because of relativistic effects a collimated explosion will reduce the deduc...
